The Best Day Ever

The Best Day Ever
So this is the most beautiful engagement story that you will ever know
It’s 9:30 am when Robert first calls me, “hey babe, it’s time to wake up! Go to your mailbox, there is something waiting for you!” I am just so excited that I jump out of bed and run barefoot out of my door and to the steps of my mailbox. Here, in that magical black box I find two letters wonderfully engraved with the handwriting of my darling love! One is labeled “Chiquita” (little one) and the other reads “The First One!” As Roberto told me to, I open the one that says “Chiquita” first. As I stumble back into my house I open the envelope to discover hand cut puzzle pieces that form a big beautiful heart. He says it’s pre-work to prepare me for the day! The card goes on to tell me how much he loves me and prays that this day is the best ever! He finishes this first card by writing, “You are the most beautiful melody of my life.” I read those words over and over again and I cant help but wonder why this man is writing such wonderful words on such an ordinary day! Finally, I put together these puzzle pieces and open the next envelope.
In this envelope I find another beautifully written card and an actual puzzle piece. As I look closer to this puzzle piece I see that the mysterious picture itself is actually made up of tiny little pictures of us during all of our dating period.
I read the card, “Like a puzzle our story begins a little confusing. You never know which pieces go where. Our first puzzle piece was trying to find out if we were friends or more than friends. Now we have the bigger picture so try to imagine the words as our canvas and we have a lifetime we still must paint!” By this time I am obviously crying my eyes out! I call him and want to tell him how much I appreciate these kind words, but when I open my mouth to speak nothing comes out! I am just so breathless. He tells me to get ready that he has a day full of adventures. I straighten my hair as my hands shake uncontrollably. My outfit changes a total of three times until I am finally ready. My friend Darya calls me and tells me I need to meet her at Robert’s house. I drive down and get in her car. She is playing it so cool…. She buys me breakfast and then says, “I know a perfect place we can eat these!” She drives me around for a while until we get to a market place with a beautiful salon. Robert arranged for a manicure and pedicure for me!
As I sit trying to relax I cannot help but wonder why Robert is doing all of these special and wonderful things for me. Although he has always been really romantic I can tell that today is just something more special! I tell the manicurist what Robert has done so far. She says, “Well he didn’t leave us a card! He should have left us a card too! Do we have a card!?” she asks the hair stylist. Darya smiles and hands me another card, “This is for you!”
I open my third card, “Let me be clear. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So hopefully by the end of today I can convince you that I love you with all of my heart. By now you have received the first puzzle piece and by the end of today I want you to have it complete. What you need right now if some comfortable clothes because there’s an adventure waiting for us in Kona. I hope you enjoyed this small spa treatment!” Again, I start crying! I know that today is going to be unforgettable! I blabber out to the manicurist how much I love this man and that I really think he is finally going to pop the question! Could it be? By the time the manicurist finishes my nails Robert arrives in shorts and a t-shirt! “Is he really going to propose in shorts and a t-shirt?” From his back he pulls out a big Tiffany and Co. box. He says in his sweet singer voice, “You’re going to need this for our adventure and I hope you’re ready to get wet!” I am so excited! I am jumping up and down putting my shoes as he opens the box. He takes out beautiful black Tiffany and Co. sun glasses that resemble Audrey Hepburn. I am so loving this man right now.
I jump up and down and we walked to Robert’s car. He held my hand throughout the car ride. We talked about things we really didn’t care about. We smiled about laughed about nothing and everything at the same time. I felt like it was the first time I was in the car with him. Like the first time we ever held hands. Well that sweet and soft romantic cloud would quickly end when he parked his car by the Kona pier! He held my hand and pulled me towards a boat on the water. The sign read “UFO Parasailing”……WHAT! This is just so exciting! We jumped in and sailed off into the Kona Sea. The music was blasting, the air was blowing through my hair, and we hugged each other closer at eat rapid turn of the boat. The sun was at full zenith, the water was vibrant blue, Mauna Kea rose above the clouds; that was our view. We were the second couple to take off into the sky. The assistant strapped us in and warned us about water landings. Eeeek! The lift off was the best part. We held tight to those straps as we lifted higher and higher into the air. We were flying! The higher we flew the quieter our surroundings became. Roberto and I held hands as we watched the whales breach and dolphins swim close to the Carnival Cruise ship that ported nearby. Roberto and I talked about who knows what; I don’t remember anything other than smiling! Before we knew it, it was time to descend (thank God no water landing!) and we were back to the dock. Robert and I walked to his car while we started discussing lunch.
Robert smiled, “Are you hungry or still full from breakfast?”
“I can eat. Do you have something planned for us?”
“Yes! But first we need to get your car,” Robert explained.
“Can’t we just go together?”
Robert was so adamant that I needed to take my car to lunch. Of course I wasn’t going to argue with him after everything he had already done! So I went along for the ride, he dropped me off by my house and right when I was getting into my car I get a call!
Robert, “Hey honey, I am really sorry but I have an emergency. Go to Pizza Hut on Palani and I will meet you there.” He knows me so well! He knows I love pizza! Guilty pleasure I may add.
I was so confused and a bit sad we weren’t riding together but I went along with it because I knew he had everything planned out. I had a hunch he was lying but I never could imagine what was in store for me!
I arrived at Pizza Hut and Robert was nowhere to be found. I told the waitress that I was waiting for my boyfriend and he shouldn’t be long. Her long straight hair floated as she turned towards the seating area, “I believe your friend is already here.” She smiled. I went around and indeed saw my good friend Anika with a young high school student and a huge black camera!
Anika yelped, “Well you weren’t supposed to see me but that is for you!”
I turned around and saw one of the most special pieces of our engagement story. There against an ocean view window (yes, even Pizza Hut has ocean view in Hawaii) was a beautiful wedding set up. Against the window laid a light blue wedding organizer. Bellow the organizer was a beautiful pink tier of six Bleu cupcakes. Frosty likiloi, smooth red velvet, and zesty lemon cupcakes! These delicious pastries maid a lei around a Hispanic bride and groom cake topper set in sand. The sand beneath this couple read, “Just Married!” engulfed in a heart. Next to the cupcakes was a delicious half pizza with my favorite toppings; tomatoes, olives, and mushrooms. I stood by that table taking in all of those unique details that Robert had added to my day. What a caring man. I obviously started crying again as Anika and I sat down. Out of the corner of the back booth I saw a group of high school students taking pictures and video as Anika and I started to eat this wonderful and healthy ( lol ) meal. I brought out all of the letters and puzzle pieces that Robert had set up for me and when I was finishing putting together my puzzle the waitress brings by another envelope! Of course it had a hand written letter and more puzzle pieces. The letter explained that he had chosen this place to remember our first date. Pizza Hut way back in 2008! I can’t believe he remembered that! And the cup cakes were so special because I would always bring him a cupcake from Santa Barbara when I traveled to the valley for a visit or holiday. Robert continued writing that he bought the wedding organizer to help me plan our special day. That he would love me and support me through the process and would love every moment of it.
Once we were finished eating our pizza Anika takes out another card. Time for dessert! I opened the next card and again those puzzle pieces with tiny pictures of us rolled out. I put them together and saw the picture that would soon be completed. The tiny pictures made a mosaic of one of our favorite pictures taken at the Westmont Spring Formal where Robert leaned over and gave me a kiss on the cheek as he hugged me and I smiled at the camera. The letter told me to enjoy dessert but then hurry to get home because, “the night is just about to begin!” I gobbled up my lilikoi cupcake and raced home with Anika. When I opened the door I found three dozen beautiful pink, yellow, and peach roses standing so proudly in a tall glass vase on my table! Two cards beneath those roses that refreshed my house. I opened the first and again I added the puzzle pieces to my almost complete mosaic heart puzzle. The letter directed me to put on my best dress and to wear the pearl earrings and pearl bracelet he had bought me for Christmas. I franticly put my outfit together as I wondered what else Robert had up his sleeve. By this time I knew he was going to propose but I had no idea how he was going to do it! I was so blown away by his attention to detail and surprises that I had no clue what was going to happen next. Anika helped me do my hair and makeup and drove off towards Keauhou and finally reached the Sheraton, the same resort where we will soon have our wedding. Anika tells me to go into the lobby and I will receive a text message in a couple of minutes. I wait for what seems like an eternity until Robert called! I see him approach the lobby in a smooth black shirt and slacks looking ever so handsome. He gave me a quick kiss my forehead and laughed uncontrollably for about a minute (he was so cute and so nervous) until he reached for my hand and we started walking. “How about a nice dinner for you and me?” I floated down the stairs until we reached Rays by the Bay. We ordered dinner and smiled through it all. I cried tears of joy as I recounted all of the adventures of my day. He smiled because he knew there was more. Robert handed me another card yielding another puzzle piece. He told me how he dreamed of traveling with me and going on so many adventures. He said that food never tasted as good when I wasn’t around. He said he loved me. It wasn’t until the waitress had cleared our table that she returned, but she wasn’t empty handed. The waitress gently presented a white velvet ring box on the table. I started to cry and Robert began to speak, “This is what I hope you say the day we get married. The day you become a permanent jewel to my crown.” Robert opened the box and inside the box was a silver locket that was engraved with those magical words, “I do.” I opened the locket and there was a tiny little diamond ring. Robert clipped the locket to my pearl charm bracelet and said, “Its time to take a walk.”
Robert made me close my eyes as we walked through the restaurant and down some stairs. I help him tight making sure he wouldn’t run away and securing that I wouldn’t fall right on my face! We finally reached a grassy area and he told me to sit down. When I opened my eyes Justin had his bass in his hands, Will was ready to drum and Robert was strapping on his guitar. Justin smiled as I began to cry (yes I cried again) “Fancy seeing you here!” I laughed and Robert came close. He handed me another card and a velvet blue pocket. He asked me to follow along. I pulled another card from the envelope to see that he had written the lyrics to a song, but not just any song. Robert wrote me a song and sang it in his beautiful voice. He thanked God for brining me into his life, he thanked God for brining love into this relationship. Robert sang about his dreams and desires, to travel, to love, to share every moment together and to share our hearts. Before he reached the final verse tears streamed down from his eyes and I knew that was my sign to meet him halfway. I walked closer and he bent down on one knee. Roberto pulled out a blue ring box and said those few words I knew were only his to say,
“Will you marry me?”
“Today and every day baby,” I rejoiced!
He put the ring on my left finger and it felt so perfect and completed all my dreams. I opened the blue pocket which held the last puzzle piece and finally completed the puzzle. A mosaic of all of our pictures throughout the five years we had been best friends. The final product was a heart picture of us two that bellow read “Will you Marry Me?” We hugged and watched the sun set over the Hawaiian horizon. As the newly engaged couple we thanked our friends that participated in everything that culminated to such a perfect proposal. The most perfect proposal ever.
