New Fire Opal & Diamond Slice Designs!

Published by Dane

Mark has been working on some new designs incorporating fire opals and diamond slices

(a thin slice of a diamond, without the usual facets, with a rose cut top).

He chose to pair these two stones together because they are both unusual and

different, freeform and raw, with colors that complement each other.

Check out his sketches for pendants, earrings and rings.

Here is one of the finished rings!

Chair Ring Finished!

Published by Dane

If you've been following our blog for the past few weeks, you have seen the progress

on an amazing piece that we've been calling the Chair Ring.

This week, we have some more images for you. First, the raw casting.

And, what you've all been waiting for...

The final product!

And here are a few words from the customer who received this beautiful piece of wearable art.
"Wow! That is the only word that came out of my mouth after receiving my chair ring! I was speechless. This is truly a masterpiece and proof that not only Mark with his genius, but his team, are true artisans and take pride in their work. There is no wonder that Mark gets award after award! I feel truly lucky and very honored to have had Mark and his team work on this idea for me. To see it's culmination is beyond my dreams! Your sprinkling of diamonds on the plate make it magical and stunning! I could just take a picture of the plate/seat of the chair and frame it! What a pleasure to work with you over a year. You kept me informed and provided me with great pictures all the way through the process. Your friendship has meant a lot to me! Thank you to everyone that worked with Mark and helped me. I will forever treasure this piece for the sentimental stones in it, but also for the work of art it is!"

We'd love to hear your comments. Let us know what you think!

Chair Ring Wax

Published by Dane

As a follow-up from last week's sketch, here are some images of the wax for the Chair Ring.

The wax went through several stages, with many subtle changes made.

Wax 1: You will notice that the chair has no feet. It also has a hinge to make the top portion able to rotate.

Wax 2: The hinge is still present, but feet have been added.

Wax 3: The hinge has been removed to make the top portion stationary. More detail has been added to the feet and there is a lower gallery.

Check back in next week to see the casting and final product!

The Chair Ring

Published by Dane

Mark was recently presented with the challenge of creating a custom ring for a customer. Here are her words about what she was looking for and why she felt that Mark was the perfect person to make it happen.

"I met Mark at my local jewelry store when he was visiting and I felt a connection to him right away. We have many things in common, the love of nature, architecture and furniture, especially chairs. My husband & I were re-doing our wills and I realized that I did not have any family left to leave my things to, that no one would appreciate them and sitting in a safe, I wasn't appreciating them either. So, I had a bunch of stones from various pieces that were handed down with which to make a ring. I wanted something unique and knew Mark was the one who could take all the things I saw in my head and put them together in an actual product. (He has such a gift for this!) I was inspired by medieval chairs that I saw in a furniture book and he was able to take all the things I liked, find a place for all of my stones and still make me a work of art. I wanted a conversation piece on my hand and a chair that could stand upright in my curio case as a piece of art. I'm so excited!"

Using customer's stones to creatue unique pieces of jewelry that can function as art pieces is one of the most interesting aspects of working with Mark everyday. Above is his original sketch for what we will refer to as "the chair ring." Check back next week to see the progression of this spectacular piece.

Love Stories!

Published by Dane

This week we have not one, but THREE beautiful stories to share with you.

We at Mark Schneider are proud and privileged to have been part of Matthew's recent engagement to his High School Sweetheart, Maryanne. Matthew's magical moment took place when he asked Maryanne to marry him after a family dinner in front of both of their parents. Matthew is a Marine and will be deployed to Afghanistan in February 2011. Thank you for serving our country, Matthew, and all the best for a wonderful future to you and Maryanne. Maryanne is happily wearing our Amore design.

Laura and Reuben met while ice skating at Paramount Ice Skating Rink and got married 10/17/52, soon after Reuben graduated from USC with a degree in music education. After retirement, they opened a bed & breakfast in the home that belonged to the first mayor of long beach – “The Lord Mayor’s Inn.” Reuben spent 23 years as head counselor of at Lakewood High School and Laura was an RN with Long Beach Unified School District. After 59 years of marital bliss, they are still shopping at Schneider’s and are wonderful customers. The secret to a long, happy marriage, according to Laura, is “enjoying each day as companions.”

We'd also like to share this beautiful note and pictures we received from Amanda & Christopher after their wedding.

“To Mark and ‘team’ – Thanks so much for our exquisite custom Kismet ring! You have been the CENTER of our proposal story and everyone is so surprised and in awe to hear how very personal you are. From Day 1, our experience with Mark Schneider Design has been a fairy tale and we are so very thankful to have such an amazing story to tell. Not only do we have an amazing ring to last a lifetime, but we have a fantastic memory as well! Thank you, again, for a detailed, superb ring and for a great experience. We thought we’d add a few pictures so you can know whose lives you’ve touched.”

Gemstone Round Table with Stephen Avery

Published by Dane

Mark recently hosted a Gemstone Round Table with award winning gemstone cutter Stephen Avery. A select group of individuals were invited to participate, view and purchase extraordinary, one of a kind gemstones. During the presentation, they were encouraged to ask questions and Avery gave an exhilarating account of his travels buying unusual gemstones and the process by which he achieves his fiery cuts. Mark was inspired to purchase several stones, which he plans to use to create new designs to showcase Avery’s incredible technique and creativity.

Having traveled all over the world looking for rough, including five safaris to east Africa, he is incredibly knowledgeable about stones in their natural state and appreciates their beauty, which has allowed him to master the art of gemstone cutting. Avery has created some of the most beautiful stones available and has been honored with several American Gem Trade Associate Cutting Edge Awards.

Most of Avery’s career is based on the triangle, known for creating the trillion - a cushioned-off triangle - and most recently inventing the triopp (triangular opposed bar) and quadopp (a four-sided version, shaped like an emerald cut).  His designs appeal to designers looking for clean cut stones with a bit of an edge to set their designs apart from others. A master at cutting, it is certain that Avery will continue to push the boundaries of gemstone cutting.

What do you think of Stephen Avery's stunning creations?

Custom Jewelry Emporium Ring

Published by Dane

While Mark Schneider Design is most prevalently known for our beautiful bridal designs and Mark's one of a kind color pieces, we are always very honored when a customer asks us to create a custom piece, especially when it is accompanied by a touching story.

Mark recently designed this rose gold ring for a customer at Jewelry Emporium, Jodi, who now wears it to carry her daughter Alexa and late son Patrick with her wherever she goes. After Patrick passed away in May 2010, Jodi started working with the Alpha Project, a residential treatment program for young, opiate dependent men. Her goal is to help others overcome their addiction.

We want to thank Jodi for sharing her story and involving us in honoring Patrick's memory.

Please follow the production of this ring below - from sketch, to wax, to final product.

Fawn Over this Engagement Story!

Published by Dane

We have received a flood of engagement stories lately and are anxious to share each one with you. Thanks to Randi for the following story and pictures! Congratulations!

"How blessed am I to be engaged to my best friend! My now fiancé, Ryan, proposed on August 12 after a sixteen hour car ride! He’d just graduated from Army helicopter flight school the day before, and our time together was limited before he deployed for Iraq. We had arrived at his parents’ home in Iowa, and decided to go for a walk after the long car ride. He dropped to one knee in a wooded campsite, and asked me to marry him. For the first time in my life, I was completely and utterly speechless! I finally managed multiple very loud and extremely happy “YES” then looked at the ring, only to be amazed at the perfect ring he’d chosen, 'Fawn.' After pondering what makes this ring so ideal, I’ve come to realize that it embodies the things I love most. It resembles the leaves of nature, the fire that cooks the most tasty s’mores, and most dear to me, Ryan’s Aviator wings. So no matter how far away the Army takes him, I’m always reminded that he’s still mine, and will always come home to me. A huge thanks to Mark Schneider for the design of the most beautiful representation of our love, and to the always helpful Dipti for being ever so communicative and kind!"
