Our proposal story began while we were living 2,000 miles apart. After finishing our undergraduate degrees, Megan was continuing school in Calgary while I was continuing it in Baltimore. Since we only saw each other in person about once per month, it was challenging to construct the perfect proposal moment. First, I got the ring, Mark Schneider's Beloved, from WR Chance jewelers in Annapolis in mid October 2011. It was perfect. I was so excited that I hopped on the next flight to Calgary to surprise her. Sadly, she was held up at school, and during that time, I ran into her parents on the street losing the element of surprise. Only a little disheartened, I decided to wait and try to concoct another perfect moment. I considered proposing around Thanksgiving, but then came up with an incredible idea. Megan was visiting for Christmas and New Years. Her return flight in early January contained an obnoxious four hour layover in Salt Lake City. As a result, I secretly booked a ticket to accompany her; for all our travels to visit each other, we had never ridden on a plane together. We got to the airport early on Sunday morning only to discover that the flight was delayed by five hours making it impossible for Megan to make her connecting flight and making it impossible for me to secretly switch mine. Her itinerary was changed to Monday morning, and my second surprise plan fell to pieces. Since we had one more night together, we decided to drive to Annapolis for dinner. Always the optimist, Megan kept saying that there was probably a good reason why the flight was delayed and that this evening will be "magical." After dinner we took a walk down to the harbor. It was silent. We were sitting alone with our feet dangling above the dark murky water of the Chesapeake bay. A full moon was in the sky above us. It was magical. And then, I got the ring out of my pocket. I was so nervous that I when I opened the box, it fell out and nearly went right to the bottom of the bay. Luckily, disaster was averted; Megan put the ring on, and we sat there holding hands for another hour in the chilly still moonlight. After all my attempts to carefully orchestrate a surprise and after the ring traveled over 10,000 miles in my pocket, fate brought us to that perfect moment alone on the harbor no more than a quarter mile from the jewelry store where it all began so many months ago. |
