The American Jewellery designer Mark Schneider has joined the likes of Paloma Picasso as one of a handful of living designers with pieces in The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Schneider donated his Platinum Guild International award-winning tanzanite and platinum ring to the Institution’s Gem and Mineral Gallery to add to its tanzanite story.
The ring, which brought Schneider another award to add to his growing list, is set with “one of the finest cut trillion tanzanite stones in the world”, says Schneider. The sweeping design sets this stone, weighing 12.11 carats, in platinum surrounded by 1.89 carats of round diamonds.
Dr Jeffrey Post, curator of the Smithsonian’s gem and mineral collection, said it was “a great combination of a beautifully designed piece of jewellery and a great gemstone”.
