ENGAGEMENT RING SYMBOLISM

An engagement ring serves a symbol that the person who wears it is soon to be married. This practice is primarily used in Western cultures and is usually worn by the female in the relationship. While traditional engagement rings  most often feature diamonds as the center stone, colored stones are a beautiful and modern alternative.

 

The history of the engagement ring can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, as the circle represented something that was never ending, which is an appropriate symbolic interpretation for marriage. It wasn’t until the 13th century that Western cultures began to introduce the practice of engagement rings, and it didn’t become typical amongst brides until the end of the 19th century.  In modern times, 80% of women are presented with diamond engagement rings.

 

Engagement rings are most often worn on the ring finger of the left hand because Ancient Egyptians were under the belief that this finger had a vein that led directly to the heart. While ancient Romans used the engagement ring as more of an ownership ritual, it has since then conformed into a representation of equal partnership, a promise of commitments and a symbol of everlasting love.
