People sometimes see enlarged online images of diamonds and panic because a crystal inclusion appears huge, but those photographs are intentionally magnified far beyond what your eyes will ever see. It's important to remember the scale before assuming an inclusion will be obvious once the diamond is set.

Feather Inclusions

If there's one clarity term that unnecessarily scares shoppers, it's probably "feather." The word makes people imagine a crack running through the diamond, but that's not what a feather actually looks like. It is a very small internal fracture that reflects light in a way that resembles a feather at 10x magnification. Most are tiny, stable, and completely harmless. 

Only very large feathers can affect the diamond’s durability, and those are reflected in the clarity grade. For the vast majority of diamonds, a feather is just another small characteristic that you'll never notice during normal wear.

Clouds

When enough of them are grouped together, they can look like a tiny cloud when magnified.

Pinpoints and Needles

Pinpoints are tiny crystal inclusions that look like dots under magnification and often have virtually no impact on appearance. A single pinpoint is so small that most people would never know it existed. Needles are long, thin crystal inclusions that look like small threads that formed naturally during the diamond's growth.

Both pinpoints and needles are excellent examples of why magnification can be misleading. Under a jeweler's loupe, they can be identified and documented, but once you step back and look at the diamond normally, they often disappear entirely.

Twinning Wisps

Twinning wisps form when the diamond's crystal growth briefly changes direction during its formation. It is made up of several tiny characteristics grouped together. It may contain pinpoints, tiny crystals, or other microscopic growth features arranged along a narrow path. Through 10x magnification, they can look like ribbons, but they are subtle and difficult to find, even with magnification.

Don't Pay for Perfection You Can't See

It's completely understandable to want the nicest diamond your budget allows. However, many shoppers assume they need the highest possible clarity grade because they worry about visible flaws. In reality, higher clarity often means paying for microscopic perfection that you'll never actually appreciate without a jeweler's loupe.

For many buyers, choosing an eye-clean VS2 or SI1 diamond provides an excellent balance of beauty and value. The money saved can often be invested in a better cut, slightly larger carat weight, or higher color grade, all of which are usually much easier to appreciate during everyday wear.

Cut quality has a much greater impact on how bright a diamond appears. A beautifully cut diamond with tiny invisible inclusions will almost always look more impressive than a poorly cut flawless diamond.
