Art Nouveau—literally “New Art” in French— was a popular and iconic art movement that was prominent in Europe during the late nineteenth century. Art Nouveau encouraged the creation of art that was new, beautiful, and easily incorporated into ordinary life. Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has created a style movement along these same lines, a “Twenties Nouveau.”

The “Roaring Twenties”—a time of glamour, decadence, and dazzling designs—has recently been reborn with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. True to form, Luhrmann brings a contemporary and spectacular twist to the 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American novel. The Twenties Nouveau, or “New Twenties,” style and spirit of contemporary design can also be found in the jewelry of Mark Schneider Design.

Gatsby-inspired designer jewelry, such as the unique engagement rings found in the Floral Engagement Ring and Contemporary Engagement Ring sections of, look as though they’ve jumped off the movie screen. More contemporary and unique engagement ring designs like Bedazzle, Forever, or Rendezvous resemble the breathtaking pieces worn by Elizabeth Debicki as the daring Jordan Baker, whereas the more classic floral designs such as Bloom, Reminiscent, Blue Sapphire Bridal Ring and  Rose capture the ethereal beauty of Daisy, played by Carey Mulligan in the film. Even more glitzy, playful pieces like the New York, a colored gemstone pendant, capture the vivacity of Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson. Whether your style is demure or dazzling, the jewelry of The Great Gatsby brings out the inner dreamer in us all.

Expect to see women decked out in large colored gemstones—in sapphire blues, emerald greens, as well as exquisite pearls—while men will be eager to capture the sophistication portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. Strong geometric patterns, like those of Mark Schneider’s Rapture and Legend men’s wedding bands, inspire men to embrace their inner debonair entrepreneur. Other men’s engagement ring designs, like the Bolt, Distinction, and Galaxy, capture the sensual complexities of men’s designer jewelry with their detailed work and fusion of metals. The jewelry featured in The Great Gatsby blends the classic glamour of the Roaring Twenties with elements of contemporary style resulting in a Twenties Nouveau flare. Like the green light on Daisy’s dock, the jewelry trends made popular by the film will beckon admirers and inspire hopeful fashion aspirations for months to come.
